Opening week of Fishing Season        Wednesday May 6, 2009

Enter Report Here Well the season is under way and the fishing has been excellent. Walleye fishing has been good with lots of fish in the shallow rocks and weeds. The spawn for the most part is done, with most females already spawned out. The fish have been in 5-15ft of water on most of the smaller lakes. A little deeper on the larger clear lakes. The fish have been taking minnows on 1/16 to 1/8 oz. jigs. Not one color has out fished the others. Water temps are running anywhere from 45-50 degrees depending on the lake. The weather has been up and down and I even had a coating of snow in my boat opening day. My clients where taking pictures of my boat all white. Ten minutes later the sun came out and it was gone. Thats typical this time of year. Crappie fishing has been steady with crappies taking small minnows under slip bobbers. Evenings have been best for these fish since the afternoon sun warms the lake daily. Look for crappies to be in 5-10 ft of water over weeds. As the water warms the fish will eventually go shallow in preparation for the spawn. Plastics have also produced for crappie. Try throwing 1/32 to 1/64 jigs tipped with small tubes or Cubby jigs. White, black, and chartreuse have all produced. Fish around with jigs until crappie are located, then anchor up and throw out the bobbers. The Musky and Bass season is approaching fast and with the lakes warming as fast as they are, the musky fishing should be good by Memorial weekend. Good luck to all!! Set the hook! Tom Whitman
